Description

The Unemployment Insurance (UI) system is designed to provide temporary income assistance to workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own. Benefits are not equally available to the unemployed, however; women, low-wage, and part-time workers are less likely than men, higher-wage, and full-time workers to qualify for and receive UI benefits. (1) This Fact Sheet discusses three aspects of the UI system that prevent many women from receiving the UI benefits they have earned: (1) monetary eligibility criteria; (2) the exclusion of part-time workers; and (3) allowable reasons for job loss.
